In a rural Chinese town, police officer Ma Zhe [Yilong Zhu] investigates a murder case. The powerful police boss [Hou Tianlai] insists on solving the high-profile case quickly, so when a logical culprit emerges, Ma Zhe can pocket a well-deserved award. I find the film very disappointing. For the most part, the film is an unremarkable and therefore uninteresting detective or murder mystery in neo noir style in which a few people are murdered and a few people emerge as suspects during the investigation. The ending is original because instead of laying the puzzle, the film becomes a puzzle because it is incoherent and therefore incomprehensible, which seems to have been done consciously because the film opens with a motto, taken from Camus, that reads something like that fate is incomprehensible so that he therefore became fate himself, but for me this deliberate confusion did not make the film any better.
