I am now ready for my 17th Kore-eda. Also a fan and not a single film drops below 3.0*, even the weakest French outing La Vérité (Film, 2019) not. Once again a beautiful film, not at the level of 20 years ago, but I enjoyed it. All alone in the room, a blessing and a curse at the same time.

Koreeda's approach is quite special, at least for him when he lets the unfolding plot happen again from different perspectives, with that extra interpretation and context of a previously seen scene. It is precisely because of these different perspectives that you start to look at the characters differently. Kore-eda does this in a very subdued, subtle way, as we are used to from him. Sakamoto's very soft supporting piano music does the rest.

The choice of title feels a bit strange. Unusually loud too, because the flag doesn't quite cover it all. Rather, it is a subdued moral issue about bullying, its silence or ambivalent relationship between perpetrator and victim. Not a pure (simple) bullying filmto put it bluntly. Kore-eda really opens it up to a warm coming-of-age. Nice!

After discovering that teacher Hori [Eita Nagayama] gave her son Minato [Soya Kurokawa] a nosebleed, Saori [Sakura Ando] immediately goes to school to seek redress. She is not satisfied with Hori's apology and blames headmaster Fushimi [Yûko Tanaka] for not taking further action against Hori. We then first see what happened through Hori's eyes and finally from Minato's perspective. Just like in Kurosawa's masterful Rashomon, your view of events and your judgment of the people involved changes with each perspective. Yûji Sakamoto wrote the intelligent, engaging screenplay that features Minato's classmate Yori [Hinata Hiiragi], who is the target of bullying. Excellent acting across the board, but the interplay of Korokawa and Hiiragi in particular leaves a deep impression.

I read in all kinds of comments the comparison with Rashomon. But that doesn't make sense to me. The theme of that film is slightly different as well as the entire approach. Rashomon has a story told four times, but each time with different details and a different interpretation. What the truth is is up to the viewer. I find this Kaibutsu much more straightforward. The question here is not what the truth is. There is one story and one truth and by telling that story from various characters, more and more emerges. It says something about perspective and whole and half truths that come from it, but this film is certainly not Rashomon. I thought Kaibutsu was more like a piece from Jackie Brown.

Anyway, Koreeda has also been a bit lost for a while. Visually it is all very neat and the pace, the atmosphere, the editing, the soundtrack: everything is in perfect order. The many small moments (especially in the last half hour) are also beautiful at times. But from roughly 2005-2015 he had really great stories to tell and, above all, fascinating characters, and he hasn't had that for a while. Of course, this script has that gimmickand quite interesting things are said about bullying, but the characters themselves are quite interchangeable. This film is more about the plot than the characters. Moreover, I found the first 45 minutes very strange at times. That will become more appropriate later, but it didn't work at that moment and then you are still talking about 1/3 of the film. With difficulty 3.0*.
