“Lightning never strikes in the same place twice.”

Aliens want to take over the world, but it doesn't want to be exciting. That sounds like a contradiction, but War of the World gets it done anyway. Except for one or two scenes, it all remains very well-behaved and it's a shame that Spielberg couldn't make a choice between a child-friendly alien film, or a brutal and adult film about aliens.

Now it's all just not enough and there remains an atmospheric, but also somewhat tasteless film. Cruise is remarkably flat and Fanning and Chatwin are the most annoying kids I've ever seen walking around in a movie. With a head start. Robbins has a nice role, but it doesn't want to stick. The scenes in that bomb shelter are among the best in the film. The aliens make a terrifying noise and look pretty good. The ending is a bit abrupt and the happy ending is Spielberg optima forma, but also a bit unbelievable here. It is all atmospheric, but it could have been a bit more.

I think only Spielberg, or at least few others, can shoot these kinds of movies, because somehow even the CGI looks lifelike. It was time for HG Wells' book to be filmed again in this day and age using today's techniques.

This War of the Worlds may be seen but there could have been more out of it, such as the military battle that came into the background of Cruise's family. From the first attack of the tripods with the laser beams you are confronted with the facts and you are in an adrenaline rush until the somewhat boring intermediate part in the air raid shelter. The ending then gains some momentum.

Beautiful visual film especially with a high adrenaline effect.

Film deserves a better score than the meager 3.15 I think.

But watched again after a long time remains a spectacular film based on the 1898 book by HGWells.

I had to smile again at the beginning of the movie. Everything is on fire and everyone is screaming in an uproar but the garage owner pretends nothing is wrong "Get out of that car Ray I have a busy day ahead"?
