Well, the 1986 remake was a bit more horror and the mutation looked more terrifying. This came across as quite laughable. But the denouement was a bit different from the later film and a creative concoction.

3*

This book adaptation by director Kurt Neumann was eventually given a very successful remake by the famous David Cronenberg. I even consider that film to be the best Cronenberg work I have seen so far, but this 1958 film disappointed me. The introduction in particular drags on quite a bit. Despite Vincent Price's excellent performance, it takes 25 minutes before we hear the story about the mad scientist. The story is told by Patricia Owens, an exceptionally bad actress who is given a much too important and heavy role by Neumann. The crying without tears but also the theatrical movements when something goes wrong are almost farcical ingredients, but the ultimate (failed) intention is that we have to take it seriously. In addition, even within the flashback (sometimes told from David Hedison's perspective, even though the story has to come from Owens) it takes quite a while before things go wrong. The science fiction elements of The Fly make a decent impression even for a film from 1958, but the exciting scenes are shot too broadly (few atmospheric sets and camera work is especially clear) and the story is rushed. After the professor is completely turned into a fly, he commits suicide about 15-20 minutes later. Cronenberg developed and resolved this much better 28 years later. In terms of horror, there is a strikingly ominous moment at the endwhere the fly with the human head is eaten by that spider, but that only takes up a minute of the film. I award the film 2.0* for the creative designs and Price, but as an overall viewing experience it was seriously disappointing.
