Curse of the Fly plot

"Piece by Piece...Atom by Atom...Humans Invisibly Teleported Through Time and Space!!!"

Curse of the Fly is the third installment of the science fiction series that began with the classic "The Fly." The plot of the film revolves again around the Delambre family, but this time it is the scientist's son, Henri Delambre (Brian Donlevy), who becomes obsessed with the teleportation experiments. Martin (George Baker), Henri's eldest son, marries Patricia, a young woman who has just escaped from a mental institution. The police trace Patricia to the Delambre estate. The sick former inspector Charas tells his colleague inspector that things are not right. Henry tries to escape via his infamous transporter. Unfortunately for the mad scientist, the transporter still sees them flying...

For me, easily the best film of the original trilogy. The fact that there is no fly in it doesn't really bother me, I already found that concept a lot less interesting in the previous film, it would really be too much of a coincidence if a fly/human creature were walking around again. The acting was still mediocre (apparently typical of the 50s/60s) and the music was abominable, but the film was still a lot more exciting and macabre than its predecessors. Especially the moment where the helpers first confirm Judith and then Martin sends his father, I initially expected the two to merge horribly. The fact that his brother has already smashed the entire device in London was at least as bad.

In the previous film I was annoyed by the ending, here it was simply by far the most fitting of all. Especially by adding the 'curse' element to the script, it was very clear that the film would have a tragic outcome. Maybe the two Chinese helpers came across very badly (then just take two white helpers or real Chinese), the entire course of the film was many times more exciting than what the predecessors tried to do. Certainly not the best film of this era, but by far the best of this trilogy.

Nice ending, but this one is not a high flyer either. Curse of the Fly distinguishes itself from the first two parts by its dark atmosphere and a few very beautiful scenes. A scene like the one of the woman who wakes up next to the photo of her husband's ex is one that proves that director Sharp has more in him than he generally shows here. Too bad the rest is not in the same atmosphere.

3*

Especially because of the dark tone I have to say that I still quite enjoyed this third Fly film. Where the direct sequel felt like "more of the same" in a rather misplaced setting, the setting and the situation in this part work a bit better.

The acting is also reasonable. Only a bit of a shame that Price could not participate in this part. Also a bit of a shame that this was recorded in black and white, although in this case it comes into its own better than in Return of the Fly.

A nice ending to the original series.
