edge.

I've always been a fan of these kinds of films, where you can keep watching the film without much happening. Here it is again, and the first part of the film is very good, haunting and mysterious. The second part is a bit less.

Especially compliments to the visual style. Nice use of the camera, good use of locations and cool packages. Acting was not very special, mainly because the actors had to walk a bit and had very little to say.

The story really falls into the cliche later on, but in a somewhat slower way. When it ends, you actually feel cheated, as you haven't looked at anything new. Compliments to some images and the strong start, but then you have everything.

A post-apocalyptic desert landscape. A beautiful tough woman in the lead role. Metaphors that seem to hint at US politics. Communes that do their own thing. Surreal drug frenzy. A slowly told story. A plot about survival and coexistence...

This movie contains all kinds of ingredients that always make me excited to watch a movie. Then where does it go wrong? Is it because I can't chit-chat with the lead actress and don't understand her motivations? Is it because the story, insofar as there is a story, just ripples on? Or is it because I was genuinely bored during the movie and really wondered when it would end? Probably a bit of everything.

Jim Carrey played nice, always found a likeable actor. But for the rest, this film can easily be skipped as far as I'm concerned. Beautiful desert images and Jim Carrey, hence my score.

2*

Visually impressive drama with a lot of atmosphere, a soundtrack full of pop songs, an interesting and striking supporting role for Jim Carrey. What is missing is characterization, a story and a justification for the enormous running time. Main character Arlen [Suki Waterhouse] remains an enigma from start to finish and when some of her limbs are sawed off and baked to the sounds of Ace of Base's 'All That She Wants' it is clear that we are dealing with a style exercise here. Amirpour undoubtedly has talent as a director, but she should have had her screenplay edited drastically. Or rewrite.
