Watching the blu-ray this afternoon.

I kind of have a love-hate relationship with this movie.

Actually it's not good, but somehow I'm drawn to buy it again and again: first in the 90s on video, in the 00s on DVD and now -after years out having lost track of it - I came across the blu ray on Amazon and ordered it immediately.

Sure, it's not all that great, but it's mainly lead actress Petty who single-handedly saves the film through her great personality and wacky kind of charisma and acting.

She completely masters and dominates the film and thanks to her it is still worth watching.

The rest of the cast doesn't really matter:

McDowell once again plays the villain and does so on autopilot, Watts was not yet the well-known veteran actress and hardly stands out and Ice-T and companions look ridiculous as some kind of kangaroo-like.

The plot and action are all B-movie level and it is spiced up with bits of cartoon (also works to cover up plot holes and script problems) and everything seems to be a desperate attempt to present the film as camp and cult-like, but of course you can't force something like that and it's more what Hollywood thinks is meant by this.

And yet... still I like this, not good, but it looks nice and Petty is just great.

A big six, or three stars.

Mediocre film set in a future world in which water has become extremely scarce. The weak story hardly manages to captivate and the whole is also delivered quite messy. A colorful and sometimes garish decoration (including the cartoon parts). But in this regard, Lori Petty is well cast. Also a nice soundtrack.

Horrible.

This is the film that sometimes makes us realize that not literally everything has to be filmed. I looked up the comics a few times while watching Tank Girl, and they look a lot cooler and cool than what this movie is trying to do. It's an ideal example of how comics shouldn't be filmed.

It is special that director Talalay can deliver so few good films with so many great concepts. However, this film is a low point. It feels very much like a comic book adaptation, but a very clunky one. It immediately goes wrong with actress Petty, who can not perform a single scene successfully. The voice fits it perfectly, but to see her hopping around here is too uncomfortable for words.

Furthermore, the film lacks flair. All scenes feel clumsy, while the aim seems to be lightness and freshness. The editing is terrible, the editing way too regular and the action scenes are not nearly coarse enough. I believe there are only a handful of sequences where bullets are actually fired, and one of them is the finale.

I also thought it was a shame that every scene is portrayed so unmotivated with very useless camera work and questionable humor. The film itself also feels without motivation, and when the kangaroo people come into the picture, that perception also seems to be confirmed. The cake is finally finished, and what follows is simply completely broken cinema without a moment of fun.

It's really special that there are 25 million cents in this film, because I can't read it from it. I did appreciate some of the tank and set piece designs, but there's nothing else in this film that makes it worth watching. Incredibly boring action scenes, energyless direction and characters that don't feel comical, but just childish. A disastrous elaboration of ideal source material.
