After the slightly lesser Elysium, another one hell of a Blomkamp film. An intelligent, original and intriguing story about artificial intelligence delivered very strongly, again set in South Africa that does a fine job as a science fiction setting. Chappie credibly evolves into an android with his own real motivations. The brutal action and good music make it complete.

Mediocre.

Neill Blomkamp has, in my humble opinion, everything to present really good science-fiction. That's evident in District 9, Elysium and this Chappie too. However, the end product is somewhat disappointing. Somewhere the machine falters and after Elysium it delivers another film that does not live up to its potential.

The biggest flaw with this film seems to me to be the script, which starts out interesting but gets worse by the minute. The infantile rap duo gets so much attention - incomprehensible, they are really a mockery -, but Hugh Jackman also deserves some more nuance in the role he plays. It all makes Chappie not very consistent in tone. It fluctuates somewhat between genres and feelings.

It is a waste of the originality that Blomkamp and his team put into designs and creations. Anyway, the film looks fresh - the special effects are also of a high standard. The action scenes also show that they can do something with it - although slow motion has no added value for me in action-packed finals.

So I keep hoping for another District 9.

2.5

Nicely smooth and raw, and the African accent is something different from the usual slick Hollywood junk. On the other hand, it is also sometimes a bit too much of an amateurish mess, editing and direction drop several stitches, the big names among the actors occasionally act as lousy as Ninja and Yo-Landi from Die Antwoord, and the Hugh Jackman's mat is too greasy to look at. And that the idea is more than a little bit stolen from Robocop, well let's not get into that.

That would be explainable if it had been a low budget film, but it is not. Then it's a bit hard to swallow that Weaver has such a disappointing role, just to name a few. Or that everyone is behaving so completely inconsistently - with Ninja and Hippo leading the way. And the music is bloody irritating, but that probably came with the cast for free.

All just a bit too much form over content. Blomkamp has shown with District 9 that he can do better.
