I couldn't do anything with this. I was in the mood for an action movie and the poster looked nice, but after a few minutes I noticed that this wasn't going to be the best movie. The downright bad dialogues seem badly improvised, the very meager acting goes down even more. I liked Will Smith as an actor of popcorn movies, but what he shows here is really not good. I wonder if his career is still going to be okay. What follows is a succession of action scenes, lots of fire (literally), even more improvised pitiful dialogue, including lots of screaming, and the occasional (failed) humor. Although it quickly becomes apparent that this has the level of a B-movie, there initially seemed to be some story in it, but that too has to give way to explosions. Difficult to sit out, 1*.

Let me just say it straight away. The movie is set in an alternate version of our world and that fact screwed it up to me. Beautiful sets, beautiful effects, beautiful light shows. All wonderful things, but the alternative version of the world remained an unbelievable fact. That fact remained a disturbing factor. It just wouldn't integrate into the story. It never became part of it. It always felt like a reality in a fantasy. Not good for the experience.

Great story. Thorough fantasy with the right mysterious ingredients. Magic, strange creatures, a nice old-fashioned quest. But again and again that confrontation with that alternative version of our world that ruins it. The story fits better on another planet or in a less recognizable dimension. It's obvious, I think. The recognizability prevented me from empathizing and immersing myself in this otherwise fine fantasy film. Okay, enough about this now. On with the rest.

Great action. Great graphics. Great characters. Nice wink to the buddy movies. The humor also leaves a lot to be desired. No flashy dialogues and sharp one-liners. No, the humor is too thin. Also a big minus for this.

Nice role from Smith. Not surprising, because a recognizable character. He always does well. His opponent Edgerton plays a fun freak. The chemistry between the two is missing. The interactions feel stiff and uncomfortable.

Only afterwards did I see the name Rapace come along. Not recognized while watching. Slight shame about that. Nevertheless, she plays one of the most successful characters. Very evil and very sexy.

I wholeheartedly granted her a more fanciful and more appropriate dimension.

Bad.

I have no idea what exactly they were trying to achieve: Bright is a cacophony of everything and anything. Daring for some, especially chaotic for me. A jumble of ideas and influences. What at first seems to be a somewhat grittier/cynical film about racial classification (in a fantasy setting), soon degenerates into a Mummy-esque quest for a magic wand.

The script is a mess. I couldn't spot a line in the story while watching. Also, Will Smith doesn't give a damn. With an unrecognizable Joel Edgerton , Noomi Rapace and Edgar Ramirez there are a number of other well-known names, albeit for bacon and beans.

1,5
