Brasserie Valentijn plot

'Brasserie Valentijn' is a renowned restaurant successfully run by Valentijn and chef Angelo. February 14 is the day of love: one of the busiest evenings of the year. Angelo provides a suitable love menu and Valentijn has laid the tables tip-top. She has everything under control in her brasserie. Expectations are high in the kitchen and in the restaurant. Every couple that has secured a table hopes to get love on their plates that evening. Nothing can go wrong. Then Frank, an old flame of Valentine's, suddenly appears on the doorstep...

Somewhere you can still see that a certain love and vision has been worked on in the sets and decoration and especially images of the city that are clearly fake but are intended as such, like in a movie fairy tale. Only it doesn't work. It's too fake to really go along with, unlike Amelie (which people sometimes link to in reviews) that is still placed in reality. However, in this Brasserie Valentijn I am unable to lose myself in this. But also because it is otherwise a terrible film. The actors don't live anywhere, there isn't a single spark of romance or chemistry and it's all completely uninteresting. 1.0*.

Sanne Vogel falls into every pitfall of the genre in her successor to the successful Hartenstraat and saddles us with a mixed bag of standard characters and just about every cliché that every Valentine's Day cynic should be annoyed by. Valentine [Georgina Verbaan] is startled in her own brasserie on Valentine's Day by Frank [Egbert Jan Weeber], the ex who dumped her 12 years ago and now invites her out of the blue to go to Buenos Aires with him to fulfill their old dream. to let go. Waiter Lesley [Maarten Heijmans] flirts with Mia [Simone van Bennekom] who, for unexplained reasons, comes to play the martyr by going out for dinner alone on Valentine's Day. Roos [Lies Visschedijk] is the bored wife who takes revenge on her husband and workaholic [Mark Rietman] etc. etc. As if it wasn't bad enough that Vogel is partly responsible for the horrible scenario, she directs this absolute nonsense without any irony or subtlety that makes it almost laughable. Roeland Fernhout is good as Valentine's alcoholic brother and chef (sigh!), but he too should have known better. A horror.

Amusing film about relationships on February 14. Strong play from Rietman, Visschedijk and Deddes. Fernhout and Verbaan act smoothly and old Tom Jansen is visibly looking forward to it... cork, waiter, I taste cork. The timeline occasionally blurs and that makes the film interesting (a moped from the 70's, a taxi from the 60's and the Volvo of today). Easily looks away.
