One of the toppers of the Dutch/Belgian film industry. Recognizable (for people over 50). Well-developed sets and props. Bram shines and plays beautifully of course. Ella-June Henrard is also fantastic. The recognizable is also found in childhood memories, deeds, consequences, punishments, morality, religion, guilt, friendship, love, the fantasy world of a boy, parents, school, there is a lot going on.

Although predictable and clichés are not lacking, for me it is a topper with a beautiful setting and a good cast. (5*)

In 2003 director Pieter Kuijpers made his national breakthrough with his successful film Van God Los, which was loosely based on the criminal Gang Van Venlo. To this day, it is still his most successful and most appreciated film. The director, originally from Tegelen, returns to his roots with the film Hemel Op Aarde, set in a Limburg village in the late 1970s.

Many will experience a form of nostalgia when watching the film thanks to the typical 1970s appearance, the music of Grease and the arrival of the first video stores. The story about a pious boy who falls in love with a terminally ill girl could soon have turned into a sentimental tearjerker, but Kuijpers manages to steer it all in the right direction and thanks to a healthy dose of humor the film never feels heavy. The acting of the entire cast is commendable. The film is also supported by beautiful music by the Limburg band Rowwen Hèze.

All in all, a successful film.

The second time I saw him, but he was still pretty close to me. A film about an acolyte who falls in love with a girl from the village, causing him to doubt his faith. Last time I also thought it was all exaggerated and exaggerated, making it an incredibly typical film story. It still is. But the film still managed to captivate and touch me enormously. The atmosphere is beautiful and there is also quite nicely acted here and there. And because of that, I liked it even better now than the first time. Even though the film unfortunately leans a bit too much towards kitsch.
