Winchester plot

"Terror is building."

Sarah Winchester is the widow of gun tycoon William Wirt Winchester. The couple lived in the Winchester Mystery House in California, which has about 160 rooms, in the late 1800s and early 1900s. After the death of her husband, Sarah does not keep quiet with the expansion of the villa. She does this because she believes there are evil ghosts in the house who can only be at peace as long as it is being built. Sarah believes the ghosts are from people killed by the Winchester rifles, and it's up to psychiatrist Eric Price to evaluate her mental health.

The tourism industry in San José may well be able to live with this attempt to bring the legend surrounding the local tourist attraction back to world fame. Sarah Winchester [Helen Mirren] is the heiress to the Winchester empire that grew with the production of the famous and infamous Winchester rifles that played a key role in the American Civil War, among other things. Her San Jose home has grown into a grotesque mishmash of styles, the result of Sarah's alleged communication with the ghosts of people who fell victim to the Winchester rifles. It's up to Dr Eric Price [Jason Clarke] to determine if there really were ghosts in the Winchester house, or if it's Sarah's fiction that makes her unable to run the company.

Creaking doors, inexplicable noises, a spooky song and a variety of fake scare effects: this film has it all. The film is well-produced, judging by the detailed sets and camera work, but the only scary thing about this collection of clichés is that Helen Mirren has ruined her reputation on this less-than-average horror.

A new film by the Spierig brothers, so I definitely had to see it. However, the reviews were very bad, but I don't agree with that. Being original in this subgenre of horror films, ie haunted house films, is certainly not easy, but Winchester succeeds in that. The story is set around the 1900s, which is an excellent zeitgeist for these kinds of movies. The house, although it looks a bit fake from the outside, exudes the atmosphere that is needed. It's also not a very long film and yes, time is taken for the characters. That benefits the story because of course you need an explanation why Dr Price is invited to make an assessment of Mrs. Winchester.

It usually doesn't get very creepy and people who expect a scary movie will be disappointed. Winchester is a bit lacking in timing to really excel in the jump scares. I thought the one with the mirror was strong, even though you know that a jumpscare is coming. Often they are a bit too sought after so they don't work or not with me. That being said, the jumpscares are definitely not the most important thing about the film. I thought the story was realistic and believable enough to go along with it. Slowly the truth unfolds and anyone who can draw attention to it will find this a decent film.

It's also a mystery to me why people are so negative about this film in the reviews.

Just a nice film with the necessary tension and also the drama of the story in which our lead actress lives after the death of her husband. A well thought out fact, for every dead person who yields a Winchester weapon, a room in the house is built according to the circumstances in which the person killed was in the last minutes of her/his life. For example, the wife of the psychiatrist Eric Price, who was also killed by a Winchester, lives in a kind of greenhouse. There he meets her again.

In any case, we had a great time with this film and our rating is a good 7+.
