Nice reunion.

He doesn't make too many films, but he always manages to capture something special. Not that Ghostland is now a film that blurs the boundaries of the horror film, but it does play with a number of well-known clichés and knows how to do something new with them within the boundaries. Best of all, no silly attempts to make it half drama, just pure horror movie.

Also a very atmospheric horror. Visually beautiful, thanks to a brilliant setting. Soundtrack is okay, but it is mainly the sound effects that provide some extra tension. Acting also on a high level, especially considering the genre.

Perhaps a pity that the film did not end 10 minutes earlier, but Laugier still opts for a slightly more conventional ending. The ending itself isn't bad at all, there are still a few nice scenes in it, but the potential for a slightly darker finale was definitely there.

It's a pity that Laugier doesn't make many films, a director like him is a bit missed in the genre. But at least he makes sure that his films are always worth the effort.

4.0* and a extended review

Funny that it always has to be about Martyrs (and I'm in on it). Probably the least typical Laugier film... and yet his most successful. You seldom hear about Saint Ange, let alone The Tall Man (which I'm really eager to review right now) and Ghostland fits in nicely with those two. Super (but really super) stylish genre film with an amazingly noisy soundtrack. He absolutely does not shy away from genre clichés, but skilfully bends them to his advantage. It doesn't feel like an ABC anywhere. It's exactly what it lacked this year: a creative (in the details) take on a series of well-known ideas, expertly crafted by a 'rarely' skilled modern horror director. More of this, please!

This is a wonderful horror film from the director of Martyrs (my number 1 film ever). Had a great time with this. Gets into it quickly and never lets go. There is a creepy atmosphere throughout the film. That fucked-up duo, the psychological aspect, covered with a mysterious haze, is a great combination. Brutal, dark and psychological, I ? it! These really are the kind of films that make me feel good instantly, like, yes man this is, fuck it, fulfill my horror wishes. ?
