Okay.

I don't like The Beatles at all, I've seen most of Boyle, especially when it comes to the pure films. The set-up also sounded interesting, although with such a story it is immediately clear that you should not expect too serious a film. This felt like a typical Boyle snack, but at the same time you also feel that the best man is getting older.

Whether a band like The Beatles has really been so influential that they have pushed the whole world in a different direction is debatable, luckily the film isn't too concerned with that and the bit of fantasy is little more than an ode to the band. + push for the romance, which is the very core of the film.

It's done quite smoothly and the covers of all the famous Beatles songs are nice. Sometimes things go wrong in the casting (James who is very dowdy, Sheeran who shows up again, McKinnon who can't live up to the typecast yet), the plot is too predictable and Boyle's attempts to make it a bit fresher only work half way. The film also fails to make Patel's rise believable.

But in the end, this movie is entertaining. It's certainly not a great Boyle, but it's okay for once. Still, I see Boyle's future a bit bleak, I think the best is behind us by now.

Missing ode.

It is a fact that not all of Danny Boyle's films work. But that the acclaimed director of gems like Slumdog Millionaire and Trainspotting would come up with such a bland rom-com is the other extreme. Firstly, the romantic and completely chemical-free part is so thick that it starts to bother you and secondly, the humor is not to be seen. There really isn't much more than a sporadic chuckle.

How a film can fail like that is quite special, because everyone seems to be interested in it. The fact is nothing short of amazing and provides a breeding ground for so much fun. But Ed Sheeran or other famous supporting roles add nothing at all and the songs are brought excruciatingly poorly. She was forgiven for the fact that Patel's character was apparently not a fan, but singing and playing almost every song so badly is an art in itself. There is no ode of any kind.

Add to the whole a completely misplaced scene with John Lennon and a weird side plot with allies, and as a viewer you really don't know what kind of incoherent mishmash you're watching. Warm feelings are constantly absent. Despite all the beautiful compositions and good intentions. The beginning is still nice, but it soon becomes apparent that you are not looking at meat or fish and disappointment dominates. Danny Boyle can scratch his head.

“When did you write that?”
“I didn't write it. Paul McCartney wrote it, The Beatles wrote it.”

Excellent musical rom-com. Sentimental and sweet as can be, and the hand of Richard Curtis is clearly visible. Danny Boyle is listed as a director but you can't tell (except for some visual highlights), and in that respect this is really Curtis's film. Yesterday has a strange but interesting premise, with Jack finding out after a power outage that only he knows The Beatles existed.

Very handy as a musician, and Jack becomes world famous in no time because of the music of The Beatles. Even Ed Sheeran is in his shadow. You should not dwell too long on the bizarre premise, and Boyle and Curtis do not want to go into the matter very deeply. Yesterday is ultimately mainly a conventional love story. With the music of The Beatles and Lily James, so you won't hear me complaining. Especially not because Patel and James have a nice chemistry, no matter how stupid both characters act at times. But that also belongs to the rom-com genre. The Beatles, Lily James, humor and romance, Danny Boyle and a brilliant cameo from Robert Carlyle as John Lennon… What more could you want?
