Bette Davis and Olivia de Havilland (who will be 100 in a little over a month!) have made a handful of films together, all of which are worth seeing without exception. Both are very much typecast in this film. Davis as the cunning, scheming shrew and De Havilland as her good-natured, somewhat naive counterpart. The result is a solid character study about two sisters, in which the differences between them are further magnified after the dramatic twist one third of the way through.
I do get the feeling that the Hays Code people turned a blind eye here and there with this film, but the ending is completely in line, after all... evil punishes itself.

This is Hollywood nonsense at its melodramatic best. Olivia de Havilland plays Roy Timberlake, the embodiment of innocence whose life is made miserable by Stanley [Bette Davis, the blueprint for the 'sister-from-hell']. Jealousy, manipulation, lies, deceit and deceit are the order of the day in this insane but entertaining melodrama in which Bette Davis is allowed to pull out all the stops. With seasoned character actors such as Charles Coburn, Billie Burke and Hattie McDaniel in supporting roles, this is one to lick your fingers at. What is striking is that this largely superficial pulp seems to take a political stance when Stanley blames a black office worker and family friend for a fatal car accident she caused. Switch off your brain and enjoy!

Good film in which a woman runs off with her sister's husband. A film that seems a bit boring to start with, but gradually gets better. A wonderful love-to-hate role by Bette Davis who does what she is good at. The melodramatic music is sometimes too obvious.
