As can be expected, Cate Blanchett once again plays a flawless leading role. But the story about a headstrong conductor didn't do much for me. That's why my rating on balance barely exceeds the average.

Weird, not to say eccentric, to start the film with about 5 minutes of closing credits. There isn't much to do for the first hour or so anyway. It is clear that the person who wrote the synopsis has not seen the film himself, because the daughter hardly plays a role in the whole.

Lydia Tár [Cate Blanchett] is the headstrong conductor of a prestigious German orchestra. She lives with violinist Sharon [Nina Hoss] and his daughter Petra [Mila Bogojevic] whom she protects tooth and nail against every threat. But it is her own career and reputation that come under threat when a connection is made between her and a tragic event involving one of her orchestra members [Sylvia Flote]. Although in many ways it gives the impression of being a biographical drama, that is not correct, although Blanchett naturally studied some prominent conductors. Blanchett (after Carol and Blue Jasmine) gives a new masterclass in controlled mania and is completely convincing as a top conductor. But the opening is a lot of bite and after that it takes quite a long time before the story really gets going.

The masterly role of Cate Blanchett is the main reason to see this very long, at times pretentious but ultimately fascinating film. After a tough start, the film gains more and more power, to finally end in an ambiguous but fitting way. Plot and characters are built up subtly and accurately by director Todd Field, but the viewer is expected to be patient.
