The family man Saeed is on a religious mission. He wants to cleanse the Iranian city of Mashhad, which is sacred to him, of the immoral street prostitutes. While 9/11 is stirring things up in the Western world, the Iranian city of Mashhad is under the spell of the Spider Killer. This serial killer picks up prostitutes and (in a possible nod to Hitchcock's Frenzy) strangles them with their scarf. Rahimi [Zar Amir-Ebrahimi] is a free-spirited journalist who has been out of work since an incident at her previous employer. She decides with the help of colleague Sharifi [Arash Ashtiani] to find out the identity of the serial killer. Abbasi soon reveals the killer's identity and weaves together his personal story – as a construction worker and exemplary father on a religious mission to 'clean the streets' – with that of the woman trying to expose him. And that's not the only elements that make this serial killer thriller special. Atmospheric and exceptionally well acted with a shocking prologue and a remarkable denouement, Amir-Ebrahimi earned a well-deserved Golden Palm. So in Cannes they are not always wrong.

I was in Iran in 2016 and saw for myself how double the moral is, how eager some people want to step into the modern world. But how an ancient system and strict social control kept the country in a grip and still does. This is really sublime in this film, in a gripping story. With the necessary tension and with very well developed characters. I am really impressed with this masterpiece. And I cry with those people, they want so badly and are so done with that hypocritical talk.

Strong drama. The story is not very original, but the topical and socially critical theme makes it different than usual. The film opens strong. The viewer is quite extensively acquainted with a lady who is abruptly murdered and thus turns out to be the first victim. The murder is portrayed extensively and realistically. The tone has been set. This atmosphere is held throughout the film and the film does not let you go until the end. Visually, the film is fine with excellent camera work. The actors are also doing very well. Great film that gives you food for thought. 4.0
