"They went looking for evil in the forest but the forest found evil in them"
1940. On an ordinary morning, the entire population of the village of Friar in New England (572 people to be precise) went into the wilderness via a mountain path. They left all their clothes, money and other possessions behind. Their dogs had them chained up so that they would die. However, no one knew why they were doing all this. When the US military launches a search, they find as many as 300 dead bodies. Most of them had frozen to death, but some had been brutally slaughtered. People are trying to cover up this bitter truth and pass it off as a legend, and people are slowly coming back to live in Friar. Then an expedition begins into the dark wilderness, intent on solving the entire mystery surrounding the lost citizens of Friar.
