Urban Legend plot

"What you don't believe can kill you."

Natalie (Alicia Witt) and her friends attend folklore classes from Dr. Wexler (Robert Englund). Wexler tells of several 'urban legends', including that of a psychotic professor who murdered six college students 25 years ago. After her ex-girlfriend is found beheaded, Natalie is the first to suspect a killer on campus. After all, someone had already been found hanged in the woods and her roommate committed suicide in a rather strange way. No one believes her until things really get out of hand.

Reminded me more as a nice thriller, which even got a better sequel. However, after review held a completely different opinion about it. The first film is average, the sequel a lot less and the 3rd part, which was horror, while the first two films leaned towards thriller, was weak.

On the other hand, Urban Legend is no more than an average thriller in which a school campus is ravaged by a murderer. The film has some tense moments, but in terms of kills it is all mediocre. A reasonable atmosphere in between and the killer with the hood comes across as quite strong every now and then. Also quite a nice (still young) cast, in which a few could do even better work afterwards.

Bad. The concept sounds a lot nicer on paper than the way it's worked out in the movie itself. I really like creepy urban legends, so it's disappointing that there hasn't been more of this. The opening scene is cool, and all the kills basically are, but there's no logic to it at all, and each character makes the dumbest choices possible. Sure, that's a horror trope, but here it was really offensive to the viewer at times. Despite that, most of the movie is still quite entertaining, and there are some really fucked up scenes like the dog in the microwave, but from the twist in the story, I really couldn't do this anymore take seriously. That really made no sense, and it only gets worse from then to the end, with the last scene being the low point. It can be added that the cast is pretty lousy, except for a good Jared Leto, and then in fact only a meager 2* remains for the good and sometimes inventive murders. And then I'm mild, I think. It is clearly a film that wanted to follow and imitate the success formula and atmosphere of Scream, and it fails spectacularly.
