The Uninvited plot

"From the Most Popular Mystery Romance since "Rebecca"!"

Roderick and Pamela (brother and sister) buy an old abandoned house on the coast. Their initial enthusiasm wanes when they hear stories about the previous residents and meet their daughter, who is now their neighbor. When they hear all kinds of horrible, inexplicable noises at night, it's clear that something isn't right. Roderick then falls in love with the neighbor but she clearly has something to do with the haunted house.

Beautiful atmospheric b&w film that is best viewed as a drama/detective with supernatural elements. If you look at it as a horror film you will be disappointed because, despite the age of the film, much better achievements had already been made in that area, even silent films of the 1920s.

Because this film is difficult to show on TV on a Sunday afternoon, too scary for children, but not scary enough to serve as a late night movie, it may have fallen into oblivion. And as said, it's actually hard to put into a box, for me it's not a ghost movie pur sang because of detective and other elements. Mystery/Romance, something like that? A kind of feel-good ghost story, where love is in the air, and which dares to close with a thigh-slap of size.

Nevertheless, this film has scored in other ways, in particular composer Victor Young composed a piece of memorable music "Stella By Starlight" that has since become a legendary jazz classic, performed by Charlie Parker to Miles Davis , and with lyrics by Frank Sinatra and co. For that reason alone, this film has an edge for me.

I thought it was a beautiful, atmospheric and stylish haunted house film in which I found it a relief that the characters reacted to the manifestations of the house in a much more realistic (sober, but not unnecessarily negative) way. As a result, I was much more involved in the story and found the film really scary. Not even finished watching before going to sleep and looking further the next day. A really beautiful movie.

Little tension, little atmosphere and a great lack of scaryness make this film a rather boring showing.

Furthermore, the cast does not play particularly well.
