Samuel is a boy who is in a wheelchair. He lives with his mother Elena in a large country house on the edge of a forest. His mother orders him to stay at the mansion, a rule he has always kept. Tasty soup.
Roberto De Feo is now better known for the Netflix original 'A Classic Horror Story', but his first real feature length is this horror film with the two titles. Smart to choose an English-language main title, although Il Nido covers the Italian content better. Only on demand and DVD from August 25, so a cross can already be put in the agenda. The Nest is tasty food for the genre lover.
It's a bit of a mixed bag, but the balance is well maintained and the film flows along in a pleasant and stable manner. The power lies in the simple story about a boy who is not allowed to go outside by his mother. As a viewer you quickly feel sorry for him, especially when the family members around him are reminiscent of the Addams Family. A mystery that is being unraveled as it goes along.
It must be said that critical notes can also be cracked, because it is not all that original. However, you don't have to be the inventor of stock to prepare good soup. With his short films and shared director's chair, the director has gained enough experience to portray things stylishly and the setting is truly beautiful. The cast rounds it all off.

A film somewhat in the same style as The Village (Film, 2004) by Shyamalan in which a familiar, safe environment must be protected at all costs from an evil outside world. Only less strongly developed here. The motives were not entirely clear to me either.
But also quite atmospheric with a chilly soundtrack, some mystery and very strange behavior from the mother. Much out of love perhaps, but with little love for Samuel. He doesn't ask himself many questions, but he is gradually becoming more rebellious. This is partly due to the older Denise.
The scares are very few. It is not pure horror. A slow burn horror perhaps that will draw you in once you're into the story. The atmosphere and the visual decor are the trump card of the film, the rest is mediocre, but certainly not bad for those who know what genre of film it is.

Fancy poster, fancy film in fancy villa and the estate around it. The pace is too slow. The tension is mainly what all these people are doing here now and what kind of group this is. With the strict mother, the resident doctor and the fellow residents who talk about building a better world. Although no one seems really happy. Beautiful scenes especially between the boy who also does not know what is outside the villa and the new girl Denise who brings an MP3 player into the house where it seems to be 100 years ago. Surprising conclusion, but with only a great finale you do not save an entire film.
