Near Dark plot

"In one hot hungry kiss, he gave her everlasting love. She gave him everlasting life."

In the dusty heart of the American Southwest, innocent farm boy Caleb Collon (Adrian Pasdar) is seduced by a beautiful girl (Jenny Wright) to join an unhinged gang of evil hobos led by the enigmatic Jesse (Lance Henriksen). But this isn't just any gang of outlaws; Caleb is trapped in a nightmare of soulless evil that waits in the shadows. An infernal chaos, driven by blood and absolute horror, that begins when darkness falls.

Decent movie to watch once. For gore, special effects or action, you'd better ignore these, they don't amount to much. The dreamy synth soundtrack is especially worthwhile, also for a modest piece of romance. The film is therefore unbalanced: it can also be hard and tasteless. Because a lot takes place in the dark, you miss a piece of beautiful setting. The action at the end isn't really that great either.

Henriksen and Paxton are of course familiar faces, especially to Cameron lovers (Bigelow was his girlfriend), who will also recognize Jeanette Goldstein (Vasquez in Aliens) and while it's nice to see them in an older low budget movie they don't really lift it. to a higher level, for that the whole is too thin and not beautifully filmed or written. Bigelow co-wrote the story but has more talent for directing.

Deviations from the classic vampire movie don't lead to improvement here, the Vampires here:

-cannot tolerate sunlight and catch fire (but it starts with a lot of smoke and soot);

-have normal teeth and eyes (a bit dull);

-cure vampirism through blood transfusion (a bit easy maybe?).

In terms of actors, it was a pleasant surprise for me to see Adrian Pasdar in such a young role, I only knew him from Heroes and SHIELD The fat kid (Miller) that never washes himself, however, I found mostly boring.

A film that mainly has to have the atmosphere. It is a film that is quite easy to look at and that manages to hold the attention quite well, but I did not find the film really going anywhere.
The highlight for me personally was the scene in the bar and later in the motel.

Interesting concept with reasonable execution.

2.5*

Modern western disguised as a vampire film, slow but very atmospheric. Certain action scenes have not withstood the test of time and the plot development leaves something to be desired, but the film still has a lot to offer. Adrian Pasdar and Jenny Wright are excellent in the lead roles, but of course it is the three Aliens actors who steal the show. Especially Bill Paxton goes completely wild here. And notice the scene where main character Caleb walks past a movie theater. Tell me what movie is playing there...
