Blue Velvet plot

"It's a strange world."

Jeffrey Beaumont (Kyle MacLachlan) finds a severed ear one day. Before he even realizes it himself, this signals the beginning of a blood-curdling and disturbing thriller in which he is completely swept away. The story revolves around an emotionally disturbed nightclub singer (Isabella Rossellini) and a drug-addicted, life-threatening sadist (Dennis Hopper). The deeper Beaumont gets into trouble, the more he becomes obsessed with the dark underworld he's landed in.

Almost swearing I sat in front of my big wide TV screen when the first images were shown. "No, no," this couldn't be true. Holy desecration. The Belgian channel had cast the picture format in pre-war 4:3. The ridiculous black bars on the left and right almost robbed me of all viewing pleasure, but the thought that you should never miss a Lynch movie conquered.

BV is of course part of my collection, but there is no escaping an addiction. If Lynch is on the menu, coffee will be served, until the last gulp.

The garden hose immediately caught my eye, which is passed on like a baton within the crazy total work in both The Straight Story and Mulholland Dr. No, then that neat Jeffrey Beaumont with the top button closed. Beaumont, a name that can be found in Twin Peaks again, as well as the "Convenient Store." Anyway, too much to mention, and at the end of the day that question again, which INLAND EMPIRE pretty much starts with: "Is there a murder in your film?"

Fantasy, reality, the inside out, twilight zones versus sheer clarity, even Heineken flushes the alarm to the sewer. Laura Dern as Sandy, she was so young, Lynch's ex pretty vulnerable and poodle naked. Good and evil, love versus fear and ... power, in short the whole santen stall is turned upside down and with that sex things are getting out of hand. But then those birds, boy, come on, what a fake.

So, masterfully and as soon as the stars are in the favour: look again, because I think I know I believe it's not that simple after all: maybe Jeffrey is dead dead and reaches his heaven where "Everything is nice," just like that guy in the snakeskin jacket in Wild At Heart. Well, you don't know, do you, because every Lynch ends in death, doesn't it?

Great and (for the time) progressive neo-noir from Lynch. He had my full attention. Hardly anything to complain about from the first to the last minute. A rather banal crime story in itself, but the atmosphere, macabre, sensual and full of beckoning danger, laced with symbolism, is really enormous. You will be sucked deeply into this. Drawn by risk, Beaumont independently investigates a human ear he found, assisted by the lovely Sandy (Dern). The scenes with Dennis Hopper as Frank Booth are delicious. What a crazy crazy man. Somehow it doesn't make sense that Beaumont survives his hostage situation but hey, let's take it. I also liked Rossellini less; she was Lynch's wife at the time and he saw her as his muse on an artistic level, but I didn't think she was really an attractive femme fatale. Blue Velvet is also highly recommended in my opinion.
