Atmospheric, original slasher. The First Person camera work works wonderfully, giving you a glimpse into the killer's mental state. Although I wonder why they just had to cast Elijah Wood as a maniacal psycho.

Visually perfectly fine, but the gorehounds will not be left hungry either. Nice brutal murders, where explicitness is never shunned. The scalping in particular looked brutal. The soundtrack was a bit less consistent: the dark, threatening sounds perfectly articulated Wood's mania, but as soon as that whining (like at the end) sets in, the atmosphere immediately seeped away.

It's also a shame that the film's potential was not fully realized during the finale. Had my hopes pinned on a more daring final scene, I thought this was a bit bland. But otherwise an eccentric, intriguing film from minute one. Just not the masterpiece it could have been. 3.5*.

Mme.

Interesting directing choices, but in general it all remains a bit too weak and reserved. About in all areas. While this film could have stood out due to the circumstances and plot. But the direction often fails a bit.

Wood plays an interesting character. I actually think he's a bit of a creep these days. Well, then this is the ideal role for him. And he can also play a good creep. Although we actually see quite little of Wood, we do see because of Wood.

Interesting choice to have at least 90% of the movie played in POV. At least it makes things a bit more fun. But it doesn't really feel like POV in the end. Wood has to walk very upright to believe these images as POV.

That's a shame too, because that comes at the expense of the experience. The POV eventually lost its charm, mainly because it often doesn't feel quite like POV. For the rest it is a nice visual style, but that too gets boring in the long run.

Towards the end it just got a bit boring. The kills are the only thing that keeps the film going a bit on the path to the final phase. Although a lot of kills lack some spice. Crude at times, but generally not nearly as gruesome as a lot of people claim the kills are.

It gets boring in the long run, although the film picks up again reasonably well in the final phase, where it is all a bit more intense. The film lacks that a bit in previous parts. The movie is a bit too slow in general, and if the POV doesn't really work then you've dropped some points unfortunately.

But a good final phase, and great final scenes. Especially when Wood is torn to pieces by his delusions. There's also the gore that the rest of the movie lacks a bit. Otherwise a great movie, but it could have been a lot better.
