Hard.

There are films that want to make a name for themselves through fast and shocking horror, but there are also films that still make the effort to build something around it. That immediately makes this The Sadness a stronger film than similar results. You are really drawn into this instead of repelled.

It all has to open, but once things are up and running, the film pulls out all the stops and you guarantee a pretty hard horror film with remarkably mean content. Perhaps even a bit too extreme to be liked by everyone, but some of the film's finds are certainly fun. The advantage is also that the images closely follow each other.

The acting is not brilliant, but there are quite memorable characters in the film. Actually, I only found the guy with the sunglasses in the subway more captivating than the crazy businessman. You should only expect a little less from the heroes, because unfortunately they are just dead figures in a world that is portrayed quite eccentrically by the other actors.

The finale is indeed a bit disappointing, but the pace is high and the mean nature of this film ensures that attention is easily drawn to the screen. There will undoubtedly not have been enough budget, but that is made up for by a director who knows where he wants to go and goes full for it. It's nice that these kinds of films are still made at all among the safe stuff that appears in cinemas these days.

Easily the most violent film I've seen in years. Not for everyone but if you can stand your core, enjoy it!

Very successful variant on a Zombie film, which knows how to live up to its reputation that has rushed ahead. The Sadness - Ku Bei (2021) deserves a place in the outer category, especially in the gore, gore and excessive brutality section. Something that also applies to the associated special effects and make-up results. We often see that the story is of secondary importance in this genre. This is also the case with this Taiwanese film by the debuting Canadian director Rob Jabbaz. A young couple sets out one morning (like any weekday), Jim drops Kat off at the station and goes on his own way. During the ride there is already an ominous atmosphere in the streets of the city. Then, when a virus circulating around the world turns more and more people into extremely violent, murderous monsters (who also take pleasure in doing so), the couple tries to get back together before it's too late. Both then go from one massacre to the next while the chances of making it out alive are dwindling by the minute.

Subsequently we get some scenes in the Sadeness that are still provided with the better chop work including blood spatter, which are very convincingly portrayed. That was less applicable to the acting part, especially of the two protagonists who barely rose above average. In this area it was the actor Tzu-Chiang Wang, who steals the show as an older, infected office/businessman.

This film will certainly not be to everyone's taste, but for the genre enthusiast who can take a beating, the Sadness is absolutely not to be missed. Very good.
