It's a pretty good movie, but I expected more from it. The positive thing is that the pace is good throughout and the film never becomes boring. The message may also be positive: the war on drugs is pointless and the State or police that fight against it are - especially in Iran - at least as criminal as the drug criminals. The disadvantage is that there is not really a fascinating twist or plot twist: perhaps that is also positive because such a twist would only be a film cliché (such as Samad himself turning out to be the big drug dealer)[ /spoiler] but as a result the film lacks any deeper layer. At most, the film has a moralistic twist: Samad, who kept putting everyone under heavy pressure to find the biggest drug dealer and save himself, is done, just like the big drug dealer. A 7.5 (so slightly higher than the film rates itself ).

Not that I know what it is about with a dozen Iranian films, but a crime film from Iran was still new to me. I was actually watching quite intently for the first 45 to 60 minutes. The pace was quite high then with the very energetic and charismatic police inspector Samad. The events and arrests/interrogations follow each other at a rapid pace in the hope of finding the drug boss Nasser. I thought it was very varied and very well presented, often with a small humorous quip. Samad himself is a pit bull, bordering on intimidating, with only one goal in mind and almost everything must give way to that goal. We also know Samad (Payman Maadi) from the film A separation, (Jodaeiye Nader az Simin (Film, 2011)

After Nasser's own arrest the film became a bit bogged down for me. First of all, because the apparently mythical and untraceable drug boss actually meant little. No charisma, no personality, not someone to be scared of, a bit of a shame actually.

What follows is a tangle of the investigation and the Iranian justice system with all its consequences. The cell was also a motley collection. It's just those subplots with that boy and that paralyzed father that made me lose interest in the entire film. Corruption and the zero-tolerance policy create an explosive cocktail that benefits no one, I conclude. Unfortunately, the strong first part was not continued for me, which is why (only) a 3.5*.

Over the years I have seen more than twenty films from Iran. They generally score above average. The films are notable for their cleverly constructed scenarios and excellent acting and camera work.

These smooth police films confirm that once again. The film lasts over two hours, but they fly by because of the high pace at which the various complications occur. A more than fascinating film with another impressive leading role by Peyman Maadi (Jodaeiye Nader az Simin). A film to see several times.
