The best Friday the 13th of the whole bunch.

Although they are different, the first five Friday the 13th felt very similar. Jason Lives is in that respect the first film that really does something new with the material, even if the basic premise is the same; Jason returns to Camp Crystal Lake and kills teenagers there. But Jason Lives is doing what Dream Warriors did for Freddy Krueger; a dose of (black) humor. And that humor also suits Jason remarkably well. Fortunately, Jason's character remains a deadly serious silencer himself, but everything around them is more witty, sharper and more fun, especially after five Friday the 13th films with a fairly identical feel. The film is full of injokes and references (it is not for nothing that Kevin Williamson, the author of Scream, was inspired by this film) and especially in terms of editing the film does a lot of nice things.

But Jason Lives also contains the most likeable characters. Tommy Jarvis is back, this time played by Thom Mathews from Return of the Living Dead, and gets help from the adventurous Megan. But the sheriff - in these kinds of films often nothing more than a one-dimensional bastard - is also a nice character and one of the most sympathetic figures from the Friday series. The other characters are also nice and we finally see a group of children at the summer camp. And even the standard beef cattle (the paintballers or that first couple in the car) are more fun and memorable than in the other movies. In addition, this Friday is also the shortest of them all, so it's a lot tighter. No endless scenes full of suspense, in Jason Lives that best Jason is busy with the household at a nice pace.

3.5 stars.

I think this is the 2nd movie I've seen in the series, and it mostly comes across as a must-have. The humor that many here praise, I think is of a sadly low level. Well, it must be your thing. Combined with the bloodless kills and lack of nudity, I'm guessing the target audience must be 13 or 14 years old. The plot was also unclear to me. These kind of movies are of course not really about plot but here it was not even attempted. Just a random guy who completely randomly kills everyone and can't kill. That is it. The beef cattle are also introduced so poorly that they are already dead before you recognize them as characters. Finally, the sheriff's actions and behavior are so little like a sheriff that I suspect he had never heard of the term sheriff himself. This goes far beyond a lame stereotype. Again, the target audience seems to be children. It makes the film a messy mess that is neither exciting nor funny. There are tons of funnier slashers out there.

Actually a good part, but you have to love the franchise. It all remains cheesy and the murders are especially many and fast than exciting or impressive. But Jason is great. We also get Tommy again who was also seen in the 2 previous parts. Doesn't have to be for me, but it's still okay here. Actually, it's especially nice because the film shifts a bit from the previous parts and wants to do something different without completely letting go of the known characteristics. Jason has now completely become the immortal slasher that you almost already have for support. The addition of the group of children and the police is good and provides some variation. Nice and airy and thoroughly enjoyed.

With this sixth part of the Friday the 13th series, people are going on a comical tour. Especially the opening is quite nice with the homage to James Bond. A number of kills are therefore quite funny, but many kills are censored and not properly portrayed. There is very little tension and horror in this part. Actually on the level of an average Scream movie. And why are children never killed in these kinds of films?

Mediocre film in which a young man makes sure that the serial killer Jason is buried and dead. This umpteenth part of the slasher series, besides a little more humor, offers little new. It's all a bit repetitive and sometimes long-winded. Some kills are nice to see and especially the final is still worth it, but 3.0 stars would be just too much.

Jason Lives is the funniest and best part of the entire series in my opinion. And especially with an emphasis on nicest, because this is the first part of the franchise where the fun just radiates. The film doesn't take itself seriously from the start, and contains a surprising self-mockery and reflexivity. It seems to be a very early precursor to the 90s horror trend, so I was not surprised to read that Wes Craven cited this film as a slight inspiration for his later New Nightmare and [i]Scream[/i ]. But it's not that this aspect goes completely overboard; the wink is there, but it never becomes a parody or the like. Zombie Jason is finally a version of the character that I can appreciate, the kills are frequent and fun, visually there seems to have been a whole upgrade, and the camp atmosphere is finally present again. And the humor also works; just for example those two camp leaders who see Jason in the beginning and immediately want to drive away, or the James Bond joke.

It took five movies for the Friday makers to have a laugh with their own series, which is a shame really, because it's been pulp from the start. But part 6 embraces that, making it a fun and entertaining sit. The fact that the visual quality was also higher at the same time ensures that this is definitely my favorite from the series so far. 3.5*.
