Darkhunters plot
"God always offers a choice. Only sometimes it doesn't seem much like a choice at all."
Charles Jackson wakes up one morning to find that his wife cannot see him. He soon finds out that no one can see him. But everywhere he goes he is chased by cats. Confused and scared, he meets Carol, a psychologist, as he walks along a deserted highway. She turns out to be carrying a secret and seems to be the only one who can save Charles' soul from the 'Darkhunters'.

Roberts is a grower. You would really label him as a complete non-talent after seeing Darkhunters. No sense of storytelling, visually a mess and very kitschy and also unable to direct actors properly. Dominique Pinon really flies in all directions; hilariously bad. If it weren't for the fact that he is now relatively successful in America. I see a clear upward trend from Darkhunters (1.5*) to When Evil Calls (2008) / F (2010) (2.5*) to Roadkill (2011) / The Other Side of the Door (2016) (3.0*) and then The Strangers: Prey at Night (2018) (3.5*). In addition, the 47 Meter Down films have reasonable quality. According to IMDB, it is linked to a possible Resident Evil reboot. None of that 'talent' can be found in this early work.

Director Johannes Roberts' earlier work hardly reflects his current qualities, but of course every name has to start somewhere. Darkhunters is an ideal example of a horror film in which the preparation is simply insufficient, especially since the substantive structure is lacking. The acting is also substandard and visually there is far too much use of wooden computer effects. The interactions between good and evil make no sense, the conceptual plane seems to be regularly forgotten and the decent opening barely reflects the rest of the film. The good thing is that Roberts has now come a long way in terms of quality, but that does not make a whole like Darkhunters any easier to digest.
