Downton Abbey plot

"We've been expecting you"

England, autumn 1927. A year and a half after the events of the series, British King George V and his entourage embark on a tour of Yorkshire, where he wants to spend the night at Downton Abbey. After this became known, Downton Abbey immediately started working hard on the preparations for this royal visit and even enlisted the help of the retired butler Charles Carson to make sure everything runs smoothly. But this visit is not without risks. After all, relative Tom Branson is an Irish rebel and the King's staff wants to take over the duties of the Downton Abbey staff, which they certainly won't accept. And then in the king's retinue there is another relative of the Dowager Violet Crawley, with whom she is still in dispute over an inheritance. Will this be fought soon…?

Despite not having seen a second of the popular series of the same name, I was still able to enjoy this light-hearted, unpretentious and beautifully constructed film version. Different storylines run smoothly when Downtown Abbey is shaken in 1927 by the news that none other than the king himself is staying overnight. It's impossible to sum up the different storylines, but Julian Fellowes has clearly made an art of making it a thriving whole. A beautiful production, with beautiful costumes and make-up, beautiful camera work by Ben Smithard and a sumptuous score by John Lunn. The only thing missing is dramatic depth, but I didn't get the impression that the makers were after that.

“Let's not argue.”

“I never argue, I explain.”

Delicious. I've only seen a few episodes of Downton Abbey, but they have wonderfully carried the spirit of the series into this two-hour film. The British stiffness and humour, the manners, the romance (the hormones are flying around), the drama etc. Everything you want to see in a Downton Abbey film is there.

Maggie Smith and Michelle Dockery stood out in a positive way (their joint scene at the end is emotional, even for someone who has only seen a few episodes), but so do Carter, Staunton, McGovern, Frogratt, Bonneville and all those other British actors are on a roll. I can always appreciate that typical British humor in particular, and despite all the stiffness and detachment, the characters are full of emotions that often bubble up. I can never get enough of Smith's villainous comments.

I only know the series by name, but have never seen an episode. As a result, I went into the film blank and it took a while before I got the hang of it. From then on, however, I thoroughly enjoyed this film with its countless comic, dramatic or romantic subplots.

An unsurpassed Maggie Smith, of course, takes the cake with her scheming and sarcastic comments. The rest of the cast also shows its best side. The beautiful settings make it complete.

A wonderful film, which once again demonstrates that it is best to leave the making of these kinds of historical dramas to the British. They have a rich tradition in that area.
