This Is England plot

"Run with the crowd, stand alone, you decide."

Shaun is an 11-year-old boy from Northern England growing up without a father. During the summer of 1983, something changes in the often sad Shaun. He shaves his head, rebels against everything and everyone, and joins a group of skinheads and later even the National Front. With only an unstable mother trying to keep him on the straight and narrow, Shaun seems to be headed for certain doom.

The early 1980s was socially rotten for many in Britain. Margaret Thatcher started the Falklands War and meanwhile it was an economic disaster at home. This is England (as is often done) takes a look at the lower classes of British society. A 12-year-old boy named Shaun is attracted to a bunch of skinheads and finally feels valued. His single mother also plays an interesting role in the beginning, only the unfortunate thing is that she is hardly featured in the second half of the film. Was curious what she really thought of Shaun's new friends. It's not much more than an admonishing talk when Shaun is delivered to her bald.

Anyway, it doesn't really bother you, because instead you get a lot of information about how deeply sad the group is that Shaun is in. This is continuously fascinating and at times even a bit witty. Parallels with the current extreme nationalist groups are easy to draw and the cause is the same. When the environment in which you grow up is rotten, you develop an envy in certain people towards the people who are well off. This results in the search and naming of a scapegoat, tokkie behavior and in more extreme cases it provides the climax, which can be seen in This Is England.

Shane Meadows made an impression with this semi-autobiographical coming-of-age story set in rural England in 1983, where the outcast status disrupts the life of a thirteen-year-old. Shaun (whose father was killed in the Falklands War) loses his innocence when he comes into contact with the racist ideas and violent behavior of a group of skinheads. Without romanticizing or moralizing, Meadows follows the evolution of this modern 'rebel without a cause'. The result is a powerful film that uses humor to amplify the impact of violence, dissects skinhead culture in an empathetic way and places the drama in a universal context through the concept of 'honour'.

Meadows was able to make 'bigger' productions after the success of This is England, but decided to keep doing what he did best, making films about small communities.

3.5*
