Fucking Åmål plot

Åmål is an unsightly provincial town where nothing ever happens and the young people are bored to death. The 16-year-old lesbian Agnes feels lonely and fails to build a stable circle of friends. She herself especially looks up to her classmate Elin who winds the boys around her fingers, but has also grown tired of that. Agnes' world comes crashing down when Elin humiliates her at her birthday party to impress her older sister Jessica. But Elin, who becomes fascinated by Agnes' courage, regrets it afterwards. There is a slow rapprochement between the two.

Fucking mål

Superb movie. Fucking Åmål doesn't really do much new, and especially nowadays we are being bombarded with films about girls/boys who dare to come out as homosexual. But what sets Fucking Åmål apart from many other films are the excellently developed characters, the rock-solid acting by Dahlström and Liljeberg and the direction by Moodysson, who knows how to do a lot with a small budget.

There's something authentic about the film, and the camera is close to the characters' skin. Dahlström has the somewhat more difficult role as the extroverted and exuberant Elin, who can appear very unsympathetic, but thanks to Dahlström also quickly steals the hearts of the viewers. Liljeberg has the somewhat more modest role, but knows a lot to say with just a look, a smile or a tear. The typical 90s stuff feels nostalgic, and the first kiss between Elin and Agnes is a highlight. During the film I had my doubts about the sincerity of Elin's feelings, but in the final scenes she managed to convince me. No one knows what will happen next, but you feel that Elin and Agnes will be fine.

Agnes is very lonely and longs for true friendship, but she is not much of a sweetheart herself. Hardly anyone comes to her birthday party. Must also be sad for her parents to see this.... Agnes is close to despair at one point. She is secretly in love with Elin, but this remains unanswered in principle. In this film it seems that all teenagers use a lot of drugs and alcohol at parties, luckily that is not always the case in reality..... Cinematography is mainly indoors and at school. Music is well chosen. The young actors play convincingly. Brilliant scenes in the film are: Agnes and Elin in the backseat, Elin with the toilet brush as a weapon, A-lid and K-lid, chocolate milk at the beginning and end! I agreed with Jessica: Johan was indeed a good boy, because he was much less scruffy than Markus. Wow, what a beautiful and courageous climax at the end of the film! In the end, it's a kind of feel-good movie.

It's been a long time since I've seen the movie. At the start it seemed a bit dated. But once the film starts running, I remembered why that high score was there for me.

The story of 2 teenagers in a boring village who not only struggle with boredom but also with themselves. They hope for more excitement and innovation, looking at the big city. At the same time, they also seem to be afraid of new things. Life is black and white, but luckily there is gradually some color in it. This is taking small steps forward, though.

The teenagers are sincere, a bit sluggish and not quite sure what to do. It also remains a discovering romance and appropriate to the age of the main characters. Very captivating movie!
