I thought The Souvenir was a nice film, but according to my review of that film, it was mainly due to Anthony – the boyfriend of the main character and film student Julie – who is a colorful figure and brings menace, which mischief is supported by the beautiful dark and expressionistic operatic music of Bartók's Bluebeard's Castle that Anthony always sets up. But The Souvenir: Part II is mostly very boring: Anthony committed suicide and we now follow Julie's grieving process, which she shapes by graduating to a film about the last days between Anthony and herself. The Souvenir was already strongly autobiographical, but in this film that degenerates into annoying navel-gazing: everything revolves around Julie and her feelings and boring life that is now getting metal layers because we now see her make a film about it as a film student - in which she expressly does not express reality but her wants to express perception of reality or relationship – and to that end only talks to everyone all the time about the relationship and its film. However, Anthony remains a mystery while she is just boring. What also doesn't help is that the meaninglessness of life that Anthony ended it with also seems to be the theme of Julie's film and therefore this film at all, whether or not because of the film theory put forward in the film that as a director you should try to avoid to make a point: Julie's film doesn't even have a script and the cameraman and others involved complain that they have no idea what they are doing so that every scene, and unfortunately also of the film we are watching, is meaningless and I, too, would like to complain about the futility of the film.

However, the film is pretentious: the film with all its metal layers suggests depth and the images with sophisticated pastel colors are invariably beautiful and atmospheric. But it doesn't make for a compelling movie.

This is what you could call a non-movie. A film that seems to be messing around, about a director who seems to be messing around…. Resulting in a lot of mess.

Stayed dry during a downpour in the Forum, and that's the only positive thing I can say about it.

Never seen part 1, and I can safely skip it, it seems. One of the most unnecessary sequels ever made, in my opinion.

Reasonable film in which a young film student starts filming her debut film. This second part picks up after the end of the first film. The film has the same tone, but the whole lacks the tension of the skewed relationship of the first part. The scenes on the film set and the entire process of making the film are fun to watch.
