The Light between Oceans plot

"Love demands everything"

1918. Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender) is a World War I veteran. After the war, he seeks peace and finds it when he accepts a position as a lighthouse keeper on an island in Western Australia, where no one else lives. After some time, he marries Isabel (Alicia Vikander), whom he met on the mainland. They would like to have a child, but after years this is unfortunately unsuccessful. When one day they find a rowing boat that has washed up with a dead man and a baby in it, they eventually decide to adopt her, with all the consequences that entails.

The film may be a bit sentimental, certainly very classic, but it is all indescribably pathetic. In any case, Cianfrance always manages to make me feel sorry for his characters. They often have pretty good cards in their hands, but luck is not (permanently) reserved for them. In this case it is Isabel who really has everything with her except for that one thing: it is not possible to carry a pregnancy to term. The light between oceans makes it very tangible how the couple subsequently reacts to the baby that suddenly falls into their hands (more or less a deus ex machina at that point in the story). The drama that follows is actually inevitable. Tom in particular has no real choice: if he would draw up a report on the foundling, he would thereby destroy his wife and his marriage. In the settlement afterwards, the characters remain believable at all times. The pace and composition of the story are also just right. The classic design is very appropriate for such a drama, and the shots of the trips to and from the island in particular are often beautiful. Sunsets don't really matter to me, but that is countered by the well-shot moment when Tom is executed. Vikander finally plays very well again and completes the picture. I am sensitive to this.

A great movie in a beautiful location. Great story and very slow. Top actors and music. Swoon away for an evening.
