Requiem for the American Dream plot

"Noam Chomsky and the PRINCIPLES of CONCENTRATION of WEALTH & POWER"

Noam Chomsky is an American linguist, philosopher, activist, and one of the most influential intellectuals of our time. In a series of long interviews – recorded over a period of four years – he tells how the American Dream, the national ideal, which according to Chomsky (1928) was part symbol and part reality, came to an end. “During the Great Depression, there was a real hopeful feeling,” he recalls, “but not today.” The difference between the 1930s and now: Today's inequality stems from super-wealth and that erodes democracy.

I only knew Noam Chomsky by name, but he has a very clear and simple view on things that appeals to me. This documentary is quite left-oriented, fortunately without annoying dogmas and unfocused anger. Ten principles are explained in which way the American (but also applicable to European countries with Anglo-Saxon policies) economic power holders run things and how they want to maintain this power. I was actually familiar with many of those principles, but I still found them convincing and shocking. Fortunately, at the end Chomsky gives a simple tip on how to break through all this. I think that Pikety's book fits in seamlessly with this.

Interesting.

Chomsky doesn't say anything earth-shattering, all the analyzes in this documentary have been commonplace for some time, especially in left-wing circles. And yet this documentary has its uses, because rarely have the points made been presented so clearly and convincingly. The division into 10 principles is a smart choice, because it helps to keep it clear and make connections easily.

So not much news and I would like to dig a little deeper, but it is a very clear and concise analysis of the situation in the USA.

Big 3*.

Noam Chomsky, widely regarded as one of the most influential thinkers of his generation, holds a mirror up to the American Dream through 10 principles about the way wealth and power are and remain interrelated. With archive images and concrete references to historical writings such as Aristotle's 'Politika' and Adam Smith's 'The Wealth Of Nations', 90-something Chomsky painfully exposes how a system is maintained in which the very richest have and retain power and effectively enslaves hardworking citizens. Not a film to cheer about, but Chomsky knows better than anyone how to put his finger on the sore spot in clear terms. Not just for the US, but for all capitalist societies. Including ours!
