The Last Black Man In San Francisco gripped my soul for 121 minutes. I am still captivated by this masterpiece. This one is for the connoisseurs.

Rarely before has a film managed to extract all the emotions from me in such a short time. This masterpiece is sweet, cinematographically perfect, bitter, honest and pure. An ode to a city that has so much wrong with it. A city that you can only hate if you have loved it. Watch this, please. You will see a film like you have never seen it before. Joker and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood were fantastic, but they can't compete with this one. The film of the year 2019.

Special thanks to A24 and Jonathan Majors for his utterly magnificent performance.

“You don't get to hate it unless you love it.”

Powerful film. If you think that cities like Paris, London and Amsterdam are in a bad way with rising house prices and the disappearance of the original inhabitants, then you should read articles about San Francisco. The yuppies of Silicon Valley have the city taken over, and the original inhabitants (and all other people who earn too little) are chased out of the city.

The Last Black Man in San Francisco is about two men who would do anything to buy back the house they grew up in, but with rising housing prices that seems like a utopia. Joe Talbot's direction makes for a viewing experience that is sometimes feels like a dream, and the film could have been a bit shorter. But the acting, the music and the story are impressive, and the scene on the bus between Jimmie Fails and two young women says everything about the message Talbot wants to convey. The love for San Francisco runs deep, but there are…

A24 always manages to conjure up fun, stimulating projects. And The Last Black Man in San Francisco is one of them.

The film has a nice presentation with a playful cinematography, a very lively soundtrack and eccentric characters. And that is where the strength of the film lies, it has a special atmosphere and that kept me in its grip for the entire running time.

But unfortunately the film has a not so strong script. It sometimes feels messy with way too many ideas. And the dialogues are sometimes very on the nose to the point of being forced. And then it sometimes becomes a strange blend of modern with theatrical and that sometimes took me out of the story.

Jimmie's story is ultimately fascinating and dreamily naive. But that's just what I like. Who hasn't stood in front of a house and thought 'I would love to live in this.' And then daydreamed about it vividly. And that concept is wonderfully present here with a truly beautiful building.

And Jimmie also has an infectious enthusiasm together with his buddy Montgomery and also delivers a special bromance. The chemistry is palpable, the two naive dreamers together, yearning for a future. But at the same time locked in a reality that painfully pokes them in the side.

The whole is certainly not bad, I enjoyed myself for 120 minutes. But there could have been more in it. And the scenario could have been a bit finer. Now it is sometimes a rough diamond. Joe Talbot is ultimately also a fairly young director and this is his debut. And then that roughness is completely forgiven and I look forward to more work from this man.

3.5*
