Disappointing film by Bogdanovich about the mysterious death in 1924 of Hollywood producer Thomas H. Ince. What could have been a nice insight into the infamous love triangle of Charlie Chaplin, Marion Davies and William Hearst, is ultimately nothing more than a meandering story about partying and scheming movie stars during the Roaring Twenties. Kirsten Dunst tries to make something of it with her youthful enthusiasm, but the rest of the cast largely fails. Just like the film itself.

Good film about a number of celebrities on board a private yacht of a newspaper magnate. Based on the death of someone on that yacht about which there are many uncertainties. The film looks like an Agatha Christie murder mystery with also a small glimpse into the film industry of the 1920s. Quite interesting, although of course it remains speculation what really happened on board. A narrow 3.5 stars.

A theory about the mysterious death of Thomas Ince, the founder of the Hollywood industry. At that time, the wildest rumors were circulating about his suspicious death. Bogdanovich takes us back to November 1924, when a group of big names from early Hollywood set sail together on the private yacht of William R. Hearst, a Hollywood media mogul who was also the inspiration for Orson Welles' Citizen Kane. Also on board is Charlie Chaplin, who wants to steal Hearst's wife, Marion Davies, who is thirty years younger than him. Their complex relationship plays a major role in the film. Also featured are several prominent columnists such as Louella Parsons and Elinor Glyn, both of whom had the power of the pen to make or break careers.

The roaring twenties atmosphere of decadence and charleston went on a bit too long for my taste, but the acting, especially by Edward Herrman and Kirsten Dunst, makes the film absolutely worth watching. The bottom line is of course that everyone is actually on the boat not because they were such good friends of Hearst (the hypocrisy drips from the screen more than once)... but to obtain certain professional favors from him, and that is supposedly the reason why nobody said a word about how and why Ince met his end.

Cat's Meow is certainly not a masterpiece, it moves along rather slowly and at a certain point you wonder if anything will happen now. On the other hand, strong performances. I found the fact that Chaplin is central here very special about the film, and finally this is an interesting reflection on the whole affair.
