Biutiful plot

"You don't choose your family. We all belong to somebody, but to belong to Uxbal and Marambra, is both a blessing and a curse."

'Biutiful' tells the story of the criminal boss Uxbal (Javier Bardem), who in a greasy, shiny Barcelona is the link between a Chinese sewing workshop and illegal Africans who sell fake stuff in combination with drugs. Uxbal lives with his two small children in a dingy apartment in a part of town that tourists never visit. His wife, who suffers from borderline, has lost custody. It is a shadowy and drab existence, which none of those involved enjoy much. Things don't get any better when Uxbal's death sentence is handed down after a medical examination. He has only a few months to live. What can Uxbal do about the sick situation he finds himself in?

I had to see this one, so I bought it for a small price via marktplaats. It's a heavy film with a lot of drama, and yet I didn't find it too sentimental or unbelievable. I thought it came across as realistic and with a great sense of atmosphere. Very well played by the entire cast and a captivating and moving story that really touched me. I could have watched this for hours. At one point I was completely into it. Very beautiful and intense. A great movie, in my opinion. 4.5*

Biutiful

Impressive film by Iñárritu. Biutiful comes at you like a snowball of misery, and every time you think it can't get any worse, Iñárritu comes up with something new. You have to be able to handle it, but because of the realistic and raw approach you are completely drawn into the life of Uxbal. Fantastic acting by Bardem, and also actress Maricel Alvarez and the child actors deserve full credit. Barcelona has probably never looked so ugly, and even the sun's rays bring little relief. The ending is tragic and beautiful, and I don't think the movie could have ended any other way.

setback.

Especially because in the meantime I have a lot of confidence in Iñárritu as a director. He often gets exactly the right raw tone with his films, but I miss that a bit with Biutiful. The film is certainly raw and has a rough feel, but it just packs less. I had that problem much less with his other films.

It also doesn't help that I didn't get along very well with Bardem's character. Of course he gets enough traits to easily distinguish himself from other main characters in similar environments, but his situation combined with his living environment could never take me away. The fact that I then get to see him for 148 minutes is not very helpful.

I have to say that some scenes are portrayed exceptionally strongly and the film never feels unrealistic, despite the plot being drawn quite far. The atmosphere of the film is perfect. Strong camera work that easily and cleverly captures the more exciting situations. Iñárritu comes quite far in terms of stylization, but in that area I have never worried about his films.

The story just grabs me a little less. Despite the quite interesting-sounding plot, the film didn't really touch me and the ending barely made sense. If the film had been 50 minutes shorter, I would have given it a pass, but now I mainly pulled myself through a long film that couldn't make me feel anything. In terms of impression, it soon stops.
