“Well, I'm sorry... it's just that you guys talk about dancing like it's rocket science or something.”

Nice dance film that does not excel in originality, dialogues or acting, but does have nice dance scenes and no bad music. Tyler Gage is a street boy who makes little of his life and Nora is an ambitious dancer who works hard to get to the top. When circumstances decide (or are forced) to work together, it doesn't take long for something beautiful to blossom between the two.

The downside to Step Up is that little is done about the differences between Tyler and Nora. It all remains superficial and Nora seems to have little interest in the street chick outside of Gage's dance moves. A little more humor would have been welcome and even the supporting roles are played by characters who take themselves dead serious. An unwritten law in rom-coms is that outside of the two protagonists, the other characters must be rude, comical, quirky, colorful, oversexed or homosexual. Or all at once but taking yourself dead serious is a mortal sin in this genre. Tatum and Dewan (Mrs. Tatum) have a nice chemistry and although Tatum has clearly had some acting lessons after this film, he knows how to sell it with his gibberish and dance moves. And hey, Dewan is gorgeous and incredibly cute… Always a bonus. Step Up does what it's supposed to do, but a little more inspiration would have been welcome.

Energetic dance film according to a tried and tested recipe. Very clichéd, but nevertheless very entertaining. Nice to know that the two main protagonists Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan got married a few years after finishing this movie. So the romance wasn't just on the silver screen…
