In ancient Israel, King David receives a vision from God that tells his son Solomon to succeed him as king. His other son plans to come to the throne anyway. Meanwhile, Egypt clears the way for the Queen of Sheba to defeat Solomon.

Beautiful sets, landscapes and beautiful costumes, but the rest is actually quite poor. Quite a shame because with sex bomb Gina Lollobrigida (almost in a different sexy outfit in every shot) and especially top actor Yul Brynner in the leading roles, I actually expected a more fascinating story. They didn't do a bad job, but sometimes the acting is too exaggerated. There is quite a lot of talking in this film and not all dialogues are equally fascinating or interesting, which often makes it boring. Add to that a duration of more than two hours and you have a long and tiring session ahead. The last 30 minutes are quite nice, especially the classic trap with the use of the sun.

King Vidor's last feature film from the time when epic film adaptations of biblical stories were fashionable. Apart from a few massive action scenes, a mediocre film with noticeably poor studio settings.
Yul Brynner, who had to fill in at the last minute for the suddenly deceased Tyrone Power, looks like he is in a declamation contest. George Sanders doesn't make much of it either. Gina Lollobrigida, on the other hand, is well cast as the exotic Queen of Sheba. Acting has never been her strong point, but she does a pretty good job in this film, including a rather sultry love dance.
