A film that relies heavily on Douglas and that goes well for an hour, but the lack of comedy and empathy in Douglas' character ultimately results in a no more than reasonable film.

2.5*

Douglas carries this film and is supported by a fine cast. You have to like the melancholy humor and be able to tolerate the fact that the protagonist is a jerk. Douglas, however, does it in such a way that you still empathize with his character. The climax is nice and unforced.

Low score here. Too bad, because I thought it was quite strong myself. Okay, it's not a great masterpiece. It is a film based purely on dialogue and character, where the camera is limited to shooting acting performances. However, this isn't a problem if you have an engaging main character and good dialogue, like here. For some, Ben Kalmen is apparently too insufferable a main character, but for me personally the strength of the film was that I never hated Ben, no matter how far he went. Part of that's because Douglas (in his best part?) plays him as a talented charmer, but also because this isn't the type of movie to pass judgment on likable or insufferable characters. They look at what they are like and Ben is dug under the skin. I always think this is a good approach. Weak character traits are not toned down, but there is no pointing finger either.

I found it very interesting to see how Ben kept that sales persona through all setbacks and against all advice. The supporting roles are all played well, with Imogen Poots (what kind of name is that?) as the standout. Also nice to see DeVito again, I hadn't met for a long time. I hardly recognized the comedy genre in this, except for some irony. The only serious weakness is the lame last scene on the bench. I thought it was poorly written and Ben's explanation for his behavior (his possible illness) came across as too short-sighted.
A fine film, which is good for four small stars.
