Nice film that I wanted to see in the cinema at the time but unfortunately lost sight of it, until I saw a fragment of it in the MovieMeter Contest from my upstairs neighbor.

The visuals, acting and atmosphere are beautiful, and provide a successful fairytale setting that remains close to reality (and by that I mean that there are no fairies, animations, etc. in this fairy tale). There are unfortunately also downsides, for example, the course is sometimes very slow and you can already see some things coming, so that the element of surprise is often missing. The story could have easily been made more engaging. The (Irish) English from the film is also not always easy to understand, which is sometimes difficult when you see it without subtitles, articulation could have been a little better.

Because of these kind of flaws, it stays in the middle bracket, which would not have been necessary if one had paid more attention to the details. 3*

Neil Jordan has a thing for mythical creatures. After werewolves and vampires, he finds a mermaid for 'Ondine', balancing deftly on the line between reality and fantasy. Yet the film has not become a fairy tale, the atmosphere is too raw for that. That is clear from the start by the use of blue filters, which give the nevertheless beautiful Irish setting a little chilly. Jordan then chooses the slow approach, which means you have to give the film time to tell itself. As a result, the film gradually gets better, although the characters remain quite superficial. The verdict is ultimately something that balances between right and wrong.

Not much happens in this right up to Neil Jordan's hand. Filmed on location in Ireland, the story stars Colin Farrell as Syracuse, a fisherman with a drinking history who cares for his ailing daughter Annie [Alison Barry] and one day fishes a mysterious woman out of the water. Since she suffers from amnesia [Alicja Bachleda], Syracuse decides to take her in temporarily. Her presence seems to bring him luck, especially when she starts singing while fishing. But Syracuse also faces some setbacks.

Neil Jordan feels like a fish in water in the area around Roancarrig and portrays the environment beautifully. Perhaps that is also the reason for the somewhat meandering story that gets off to a slow start and actually has few dramatic moments. Like the waters at Roancarrig, this film steadily ripples to its denouement, but Jordan too often prefers visual beauty over interesting content.
