The adventures of a North Korean defector who ends up lost in Brussels, where he is anything but warmly received. In an almost hostile environment, he discovers love for a young woman who is, if possible, in even worse shape than himself. A fascinating drama with excellent acting from the protagonists Joong-ki Song and Sung-eun Choi.

As far as I know, there is no large (North) Korean community in Belgium or Brussels. The film makes it seem like it is taking place in Brussels, but you don't get that feeling at all. I did recognize the Klein Kasteeltje, which is the first registration and registration point for refugees in Belgium.

In that respect it is quite an unusual film. We follow Ki-wan, a North Korean on the run who tries to build a better life in Belgium. A typical refugee story with a lot of loneliness, homelessness and struggle for survival.

Interesting in itself. I found the girlfriend's subplot less interesting, with a detour into the crime scene. Wasn't necessary for me at all.

I compare this film a bit with American slave films where the slaves are beautiful muscular actors with white teeth and the slave mixers are dirty white men with long, greasy hair and bad teeth who do nothing but abuse slaves. Loh Kiwan ends up in a world where it is always night or at least dark and everyone in Brussels is either drunk, involved in criminal activity or a human trafficker. The scene with the man who falls with his hand into the glass is cringeworthy.....
