"His life ended. Now, a new one will begin."

Though they don't always agree, Gerry and Holly seem made for each other. When Gerry dies, Holly is inconsolable and shuts herself off. Until she finds a letter in her mail with Gerry's handwriting addressed to her. In the letter, Gerry says that this is the first of a total of twelve letters, which she will receive every month for a year, in which he gives her instructions that she must follow. Her first task: go out and buy a killer disco outfit. Thus begins a year of adventures for Holly, from karaoke nights with friends to a trip to Ireland, all carefully prepared by Gerry and styled using the letters PS I love you...

Nice idea, but I really couldn't do anything with it.

Swank really is a huge rag. Put a dead character here that really couldn't do anything with it. Was actually a little crazy about it. A pity, because essential to give the somewhat morbid and sad story the necessary swing that the film relies on.

The film should be smooth and nice and even feel-good (with such a theme?), but it didn't come out at all. Butler also seems a bit identityless to me, the only one who was nice was the Daniel character. Too bad it also gets its mushy scenes towards the end.

If the story doesn't do anything for you, suddenly there is nothing to experience at all. I also found it very sentimental and heavily fake. More captivating main character or just better actress? Both probably.

Then it took way too long. For the Daniel character I squeeze out 1 more*, furthermore I hope to forget this film soon.

“Nice jacket.”

“I won it in a bet.”

PS I Love You is a decent drama/romcom. More of a sweet romantic movie than a drama, and that's the biggest problem. Because a husband/son dies, but you don't feel like everyone is really worried about it. There is mourning, but it does not come across very well (that is also due to the time jump). That is mainly due to the script, because Swank is in excellent shape. PS I Love You also has its beautiful moments, and besides Swank, Kathy Bates is especially good again.

This movie starts off horribly annoying. The opening scene with the bickering Gerry and Holly almost made me turn the movie off again; something I don't often do. Moments later, during Gerry's memorial, PS I Love You finally gets going a bit. The tempo nevertheless remains a bit on the low side and therefore it is not always interesting. The moments in beautiful Ireland (both the ladies' visit and the flashbacks) were in my opinion head and shoulders above the rest in every way. The film owes a lot to the funny Lisa Kudrow, a strong performance by Kathy Bates and a soundtrack that at times manages to create the right atmosphere. Leading actress Hilary Swank has sometimes left more of an impression and you never really bond with Gerard Butler's character as a viewer. Ultimately, the film serves well as romantic viewing, but I didn't find it above average anywhere.

3*
