On the Beach plot

"The Biggest Story of Our Time!"

The story is set in the future (1964) when nearly all life on Earth has been destroyed by the radioactivity of a nuclear holocaust. Only Australia was spared, but it is only a matter of time before they too will experience the radioactivity. The Australians all have different visions of their approaching end. Some live it up and others take the available suicide pills en masse. When they learn that rainfall may have cleaned up some of the Northern Hemisphere's atmosphere, a submarine captain and his crew head north to explore.

During the Cold War, the fear of an atomic boom and nuclear war was so fierce that the idea of a film about such a world disaster in the very near future was not so surprising.

A light SF film, that unfortunately dilutes too much in sentimentality and romance and comes across as absurd on several points. Where was the panic, dear mister Stanley Kramer?

As a warner of the danger of such a nuclear disaster, it is certainly creditable.

Nice.

A slightly overly sentimental film adaptation of the book of the same name. That made a bit more of an impression than this decent film adaptation. Perkins Gardner and Astaire at their best opposite a somewhat dull Peck. I've seen him in some better roles. Cool car race too where everyone, it seems, is killing themselves.

Furthermore, it is not a very sensational and meandering film in which the sentiment somewhat undermines the intensity of the theme. I would like to raise a warning finger for a nuclear disaster, but it now seems a bit dated.

A film whose ending touched me, when Peck comes ashore with his submarine he is taken in by the still beautiful-looking Avan Gardner, she falls for him and the two have an affair.

Meanwhile, Perkins has an emotionally unstable wife and child.

and then there is fred astaire in a supporting role 2.

the characters all get a lot of screen time, but the main focus is on the characters of Peck and Gardner, she is attracted to him but he cannot simply forget his lost family.

A lot of drama with the atomic war story in the background, but that is more or less a side plot of the main theme.

the ending is quite depressing, but that has its charm in its own way
