Excellent film about two students who fall in love with each other. The film is set in England before World War I. A beautiful love story in a time and environment in which homosexuality was forbidden. Beautiful costumes, beautiful locations (the old buildings) and good acting.

Based on the book by EM Forster, also homosexual and perhaps partly because his book was not published until later when the social view of homosexuals was gradually changing. Maurice is a film from the Edwardian era, such a typical English upper class movie. A little stiff here and there, but well done by Grant and Graves.

The relationship between the two is not obvious and there is also mutual doubt. So gripping was the scene in which people sincerely asked to be cured of these unchaste thoughts. The time period is nicely displayed and cinematographically the film is fine. Good atmosphere, soft colors and also credible. Maurice is a powerful film that was beautifully shot around Cambridge, another statement against the establishment, demonstrating that sexuality exists in all walks of life.

Mediocre.

Pretty stiff drama. It is quite clear how the film will unfold. Homophily at that time: it would be surprising if Maurice had fared easily. Set on the eve of World War I, it turns out to be only a detail - the focus is solely on Maurice and the possible impact of his orientation.

Well acted, but somewhat long-winded. The pedantic upper class rigidity is neatly done as always, but it's not necessarily pleasant to look at. In my opinion it is also a bit too theatrical. It was more interesting than reading about the author of the source material and the fact that this book from 1914 was only published posthumously in 1971, simply because of homosexuality.

2.5
