Patrik 1,5 plot

"No family could be happier!"

Goran and Sven, a gay couple, have been approved as adoptive parents. They get the chance to adopt an orphan, Patrik 1,5. When Patrik arrives, he turns out to be different from the little boy they expected. It turns out that a comma has been misplaced and instead of an 18-month-old boy, a 15-year-old homophobe with a criminal past stands on the doorstep.

What an endearing film. Now that I have watched it for the umpteenth time, I am once again touched by the play of looks, attitudes, hesitation, defense and opening. You really feel like meeting the characters in real person. Some things are presented in a very black and white or exaggerated way; but that doesn't bother it, it's a little gem.

Made curious by the comments here on Moviemeter, I watched the film. I can only say: Beautiful!. I was genuinely moved to see the 15-year-old homophobic boy slowly change his mind throughout the film. The actor Torkel Petersson looked vaguely familiar to me and after some searching it turned out that he also played in the film Jalla Jalla in a completely different role.

Excellent melodrama

The acting is excellent and I find the way the subject is developed refreshingly new. The script itself often chooses the easy (and predictable) path. Good soundtrack and also nice how Swedish civilian life is portrayed. It's great how you see Patrik slowly develop without major (unrealistic) twists. Even though the themes are heavy (homophobia, integration, taking the bait or fighting, whether or not to have children, etc.), the whole thing is kept pleasantly light without becoming superficial.

It is true that the film often rambles on without moments that really stand out and every now and then they try to introduce too many storylines that only distract without adding anything. Unfortunately, the ending remains open (a bit unsatisfactory for me). The characters are also depicted a bit exaggerated overall, sometimes verging on caricature (but for me it still remains on the right side of the line). By the way, I didn't think this was a comedy at all, but a real melodrama.

All in all, a great light-hearted arthouse film that deserves a solid 3 stars.
