Los Abrazos Rotos plot
After a serious car accident, director Mateo Blanco loses his sight and his lover. He withdraws and works on film scripts under his new pseudonym Harry Caine. One day, Mateo learns that his former producer Ernesto Martel has passed away. The death of this former rival brings deeply buried feelings to the surface. Although they were business partners, their competing love for actress and call girl Lena brought out the very worst in them at the time. The memory of this history puts Mateo's current life in a very different perspective.

A very nice Almodóvar, one of the better ones, in terms of style it is already a bit in the direction of La Piel Que Habito. No emphasis here on eccentric (female) roles and no excessive use of color either, although of course it remains an Almodóvar. The story is captivating from start to finish. Only the character Ernesto Jr. I couldn't place it in the story like that, I didn't really find his motivation to approach Mateo very strong. Fortunately, that is only a detail in the otherwise very enjoyable story. Lluís Homar is playing strong as always, while Penélope Cruz is unfortunately on autopilot. 3.5*

Almodovar.
Haven't seen much of it yet, certainly not given its reputation, but it often ends up in the same place. His films are quite nice for once, but unfortunately he is not more than a good storyteller. When he tries to do something extra in terms of styling, it often feels quite awkward and distracts more than it adds.
Broken Embraces fits perfectly into that picture. A solid plot, with some twists and turns (which fortunately do not demand too much attention, but always push the film in a new direction). Whether it's really worth 120+ minutes is another story, but it's worth it.
But other than that it's pretty cheap. Camera work, decoration, acting ... it's either functional or a bit stiff and forced without too much impact. This film is not really memorable, but to have seen it once is certainly no drama.
