William Wyler is one of my favorite directors. This film is one of his many gems. It is the story of a stubborn young woman whose wayward behavior not only harms everyone around her, but also herself . The beautiful cinematography contributes to a gripping drawing of life in the southern United States before the Civil War. That is why the film is often mentioned in the same breath as "Gone with the Wind", for whom this film is hardly inferior.
In addition to directing and camera work, the acting is also of a high level. Particularly from Bette Davis in perhaps her best performance ever. In addition, the performances of Fay Bainter and a still young Henry Fonda can also be seen. All in all, a beautiful film with a handful of dramatic twists and turns that keep you captivated by the screen.

Moderate romantic drama with a convincing acting performance by Bette Davis. Julie's sneaky behavior and all the venom that hides behind her beautiful eyes is about the only thing that makes this film bearable. I don't think the comparison with Jezebel (Jezebel) is entirely justified, but at least she pulls out a few antics that make the witch from Snow White seem a lot more sympathetic. Julie goes through an interesting character arc, starting out as progressive and emancipated, but slowly turning into a manipulative shrew driven by jealousy and desperation. She rarely thinks twice before acting and it is her impulsive behavior that dictates the course of the film. However, I found the turnaround at the end completely unnecessary and detracts from the character. For the rest, little happens that can be described as memorable. The contrasts between North and South are exposed, with the Southerners usually portrayed as primitives. Amy's reaction when she sees the slaves was a nice touch. Some scenes that stick with me are, on the one hand, the reaction to the scarlet dress at the ball (and Julie being spanked by the same sheet) and, on the other hand, the outbreak of Yellow Fever at the end, which briefly raised the hairs on the back of the neck.

There is no real involvement with the characters and the story. I would have liked Julie's wickedness to manifest itself even more fiercely, but that would probably have provoked an outcry at the time.

As expected , Davis is back on track as a selfish spoiled brat and you soon wonder how long it will be before Fonda gets tired of her manipulative behavior .

I understand the comparison with Gone with the wind, but this film, although certainly not bad, can't match that.

The era is beautifully portrayed and both the costumes and the sets are very beautiful.
