Equally naive and manipulative woman [Blake Lively] with daddy issues meets an aggressive, notorious womanizer [Justin Baldoni] on a roof terrace and within a few minutes she shares her first sexual experience with him. She sends mixed signals, he eagerly goes along with it, but at first nothing comes of it. A few coincidences and clichés later it ends exactly as you had expected almost 2 hours earlier. Toe-curling romantic pulp melodrama is at times unintentionally funny, but the three main characters take this book series nonsense completely seriously and I (with Maarten Ducrot) take my hat off to that. Based on a bestseller, which says something about the average literary level on our planet.

It Ends with Us rightly wants to discuss a problem, but forgets to explicitly name it and remains very tame and oh so predictable. It should therefore remain a film for an audience of 9 to 99. As a result, it all remains rather flat and impersonal. The dialogues in particular are downright badly written, not a single conversation in the entire film feels like a normal conversation or what normal people say to each other. Lively lacks just a little bit of power to carry the film as a strong woman. It is - again - too flat and too weak. You also do not develop any real sympathy for any character throughout the film. I also find the choice to humanize the perpetrator again towards the end bizarre. I fear that Lively will also have too much say in the final finishing of the product. Poor creature.

Breaking the circle

The themes tackled in It Ends with Us are not the least, but the director tackles both themes with verve. What some viewers may experience as boring, I found positive: namely the natural build-up in the story. Of course there were a number of coincidences to get the story going, but fortunately this did not become disruptive too often.

I did find the fact that Lily's father had beaten Atlas to the hospital a bit too obvious. As well as the ending and the peaceful way in which the couple split up once the baby was born. This just went over the edge and I found it a bit too unbelievable and easy.

Furthermore, I have few points of criticism to mention. Blake Lively plays a good role and her young version is the spitting image of her. Very strong casting. Brandon Sklenar as Atlas came out a lot less well because I also found the dynamic between him and Lively a lot less strong than that between Lively and Baldoni. But these are only minor points.

3.5*
