Years after Dr. Alice Krippin seems to have found a cure for cancer, a mysterious virus has gripped the entire world. Many people have died from the virus and another part has been transformed into a group of bloodthirsty vampires. Only Colonel and scientist Robert Neville lives in New York City, who is busy looking for a cure. In the afternoon the city is deserted and only Robert and his dog Sam go out on the street. But as soon as it gets dark, the vampires appear and start looking for fresh blood.

“Nothin' happened the way it was supposed to happen.”
Apocalyptic film with atmospheric images and a strong Will Smith. The images of a desolate New York make an impression and you immediately want to know what happened. A virus, of course, which wiped out humanity and turned some into flesh-eating vampires/zombies.
With a number of people (including Smith) who are immune and have to make it on their own. I Am Legend has some exciting scenes, but it's mostly about Smith and the way he tries to get through every day. His only companion is his dog Sam. This changes as the film progresses and Smith starts looking for an antidote. With an ending that is both bleak and hopeful.

Watched it for the first time at the time because of the plot, so mainly as an action/adventure. Now, years later, I've had to pay less attention to the story and be able to absorb more of the atmosphere, the desolation and the details of Smith's daily routine, and that resulted in an excellent first hour, followed by a less interesting but otherwise definitely not bad last half hour. A nice film if judged as a vignette of loneliness (in that respect the film reminds me of Alien), but if you are allergic to Will Smith, you should not start with this.

Excellent three quarters of an hour, with Smith, who is perfectly cast for this role, who carries the film on his own (and with a dog) with playful ease. Beautiful images of an empty New York where the lack of music makes the silence audible and thus provides the alienating atmosphere. Unfortunately, the film then takes a slightly different turn that tasted less to me and leaves that desolate, which made me find the film less engaging. But yes, honestly, those first three quarters of an hour were so strong that I still give it a good grade, although my attention often continues the following hour. 3.5*.
